Gigabyte Confirms New 12GB Nvidia 2060 Revision is Indeed on the Way!

For several months now there have been more than a few rumours that Nvidia was planning to release newly revised version of its 2060 graphics card. One that would see its VRAM upped (basically doubled) from 6GB to 12GB. – Now, given that the 2060 is, technically speaking, 3 years old, and more so, very firmly established now as last-gen tech, such a revision would clearly represent a very unusual decision. With nothing officially confirmed from Nvidia yet, however, is it really happening?

Well, following a report via Videocardz, the answer does appear to have taken big swing towards ‘yes’ as Gigabyte has just registered 4 new 12GB 2060 graphics card models with the EEC.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 12GB Graphics Cards

While there are no technical specifications offered in this EEC registration, with so many references made within it to a 12GB version of the 2060, while still pending 100% confirmation from Nvidia (which may well come at CES 2022) we have here yet more evidence that the revision isn’t only happening, but that it might be set for a release within the next 2-3 months.

Why would Nvidia do this though? As noted above, the 2060 isn’t just 3 years old, but it’s last-gen technology. It hardly seems like a prime candidate for a revision that would appeal to ‘modern’ consumers, right?… – Well, one of the biggest factors that may have prompted this GPUs creation is the fact that stock levels for the 3000 series are so poor that, although you can buy them, getting one, even a year after their release, is an amazingly difficult task. Not to mention expensive when scalpers (including retailers!) get involved!

With Nvidia still believed to have plenty of 2060 chipsets lying around (more on this shortly), however, creating a newly revised 2060 featuring 12GB of VRAM might represent a solid solution for everyone. Put simply, Nvidia can clear out what was previously redundant stock, and all going well, consumers can get an affordable and potentially decent upgrade to their current GPU that, God willing, will actually be available to buy!

Better Speeds?

One theory currently being put forward is that this newly revised 2060 might be based upon the chipset utilised within the 2060 Super graphics card. Now, as you might recall, in technical terms, the 2060 Super was actually far closer to a watered-down 2070 than an improved 2060. As such, this 2060 may not just feature twice as much VRAM as the original, but it’s also entirely possible that Nvidia may look to push the clock speeds up a little. Albeit though, probably not so much to make it outright better than the actual 2060 Super, but there is definitely some wiggle room here is this rumour is proven accurate.

Admittedly, this new 2060 isn’t going to rock the tech world. I think most of us would rather have more 30XX GPUs that were available for something representative of their official MSRPs rather than a new version of what is, putting it politely, quite an old GPU. However, as a temporary stop-gap measure, this new 2060 will represent a potentially fantastic solution for many!

I can’t help but feel though that a better solution may have been simply re-releasing the 1080 Ti.
