Gigabyte P57X v6 GTX 1070 Gaming Laptop Review

Gaming Performance

Grand Theft Auto 5

Grand Theft Auto’s beautiful vistas and unbelievably detailed environments can pose a problem for certain GPUs, especially at higher resolutions. Thankfully, the laptop doesn’t encounter any major issues and maintains a solid frame rate while using the native 1920×1080 display. Interestingly, there isn’t a significant performance drop when connecting a 1440p monitor which suggests a bottleneck is coming into the foray throughout 1920×1080 testing. Nevertheless, the gaming experience is fantastic and you’re unlikely to encounter drastic frame dips below 60. Unfortunately, the GTX 1070 hasn’t got enough horsepower to run the Very High preset on a 4K monitor without falling below 60 although there’s enough headroom to reach a playable frame rate with small concessions in the options menu.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

During the Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark, the laptop’s graphics solution performed brilliantly. If you decide to stick with the default 1920×1080 resolution, the frame rate remains very stable and any minor drops are difficult to notice. Once the resolution is set to 1440p, the system maintains a frame rate well above 60 and destroys the older GTX 970M as well as a desktop GTX 1060. Rather surprisingly, the 4K performance isn’t too shabby and hovers around the 30 frames-per-second mark. Saying that, it’s recommended to opt for lower settings because a few drastic frame dips lead to a jarring user experience.

Hitman

Hitman’s DirectX 12 render allows us to investigate the system’s performance when using a modern graphics API. As you can see, the 1920×1080 result was a little underwhelming and couldn’t outpace the GTX 1060. Initially, I thought V-Sync might have been enabled by mistake which inhibited the performance. After looking into the situation, this wasn’t the case and it appears the CPU is acting as a bottleneck of some kind. After increasing the resolution to 1440p, the performance was almost identical and more much competitive. As a result, you should be able to enjoy the perfectly fluid gameplay without consistent stuttering. While the 4K frame rate is commendable, you’ll once again want to reduce some settings.

Far Cry Primal

Here we can see the laptop has a strong showing throughout Far Cry Primal and easily exceeded 60 frames-per-second on the default resolution. According to my testing, the framerate is very consistent and even in the more demanding sections, it didn’t plummet too much. If you decide to connect a 1440p display, the average framerate is 60 and ample for most people’s requirements. Things really heat up when playing the game on a 4K panel and the overall experience isn’t great.
