Global Foundries to takeover DRAM firm ProMOS Technologies

AMD founded firm Global Foundries is reportedly looking to expand production by taking over a firm going through financial difficulties. ProMOS Technologies are a company based in Taiwan and reportedly are worth $506-760 million in a takeover deal. They own a 300mm wafer production plant in Taichung and are in danger of being delisted. The takeover would give Global Foundries a presence in Taiwan which is where their rival TSMC are mainly based.

By completing the takeover of ProMOS, Global Foundries is expected to have a better chance of getting contracts by big companies in Taiwan and China that are currently working with TSMC or UMC. ProMOS’ Taichung fabrication plant has a production capacity of 60,000 wafers per month and that would add almost 50% to the 130,000 wafers/month that the Global Foundries facilities in Germany and Singapore produce.
