GOG to Delist Warcraft I and II at Blizzard’s Request

On November 13, 2024, GOG, the digital game store, unveiled a video game preservation program designed to ensure that classic titles remain playable on PC, no matter how operating systems or technology evolve. On the same day, Blizzard made an unexpected move by releasing remastered versions of its iconic games, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft II. Unfortunately, these two announcements clashed in the worst possible way.

Blizzard to Remove Warcraft 1 and 2 from GOG

Warcraft I and Warcraft II were officially part of GOG’s video game preservation program, but now, they are set to be removed from sale. According to an official statement posted by GOG, the games will be delisted on December 13, 2024, at the publisher’s request. While the statement doesn’t specify the identity of the publisher, it is understood that Blizzard made this request, likely due to the release of the remastered versions.

The Disappointment of the Remasters

What makes this news even worse is that the new remastered versions of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft II have disappointed many fans of the originals. Among the harshest criticisms are the new visual styles that don’t match the spirit of the games (though you can switch back to the classic style), the loss of some game modes, the requirement to always be connected to the internet to play, and various performance issues.

Special Discount for GOG Versions Before Delisting

If you want to grab the GOG version of the Warcraft games before they’re taken down, you can do so now with a special discount code: MakeWarcraftLiveForever. The code provides 2 USD, 2 EUR, 1.5 GBP, or 8 PLN off the Warcraft I & II Bundle when entered at checkout. The code works only for the listed currencies, which can be easily adjusted at the bottom of the page. This discount is applicable until the day of delisting, December 13, 2024.
