Gogo’s 70Mbps In-Flight Wi-Fi Will Soon Become a Reality

Gogo is a provider of in-flight broadband Internet services and other connectivity services for commercial and business aircraft, and it was founded in 1991 by Jimmy Ray. The company is currently offering in-flight Wi-Fi at speeds of 9.8Mbps for a considerable number of aircraft, but it plans to increase this speed to 70Mbps in the near future. The good news is that the company has recently received its approval from the FAA for this particular project, which means that we will soon be able to enjoy in-flight wireless internet at a completely new speed level.

The FAA has approved Gogo’s final Supplemental Type Certificate. This certificate was the final piece required in order to implement the upgrade, which means that 500 aircraft will now receive brand new antennas by early 2016. These antennas will be installed by 2Ku, and they’ll be compatible with new spot beam satellites that will further increase in-flight Wi-Fi speeds from 70Mbps to 100Mbps. These speeds might not be very impressive for the regular internet user, but they are definitely preferable over the alternative of no in-flight internet whatsoever. The way I see it, things are moving in the right direction, and it won’t be long now before we’ll be able to enjoy proper internet speeds while flying.
