Google Fined $32.5 Million In Sonos Patent Infringement Claim

Google has been fined $32.5 million for infringing on one of Sonos‘ speaker patents.

Google Fined For Sonos Patent Infringement

As revealed by Techspot a San Francisco jury on Friday found Google guilty of infringing upon one of Sonos’ patents for their speakers, specifically U.S patent number 10,848,885. This patent involves Sonos’ Zone Scene Management solution which it was found that Google infringed upon. In total the court has awarded Sonos a total of $32,507,183.40 which was decided upon the $2.30 per unit royalty assessment of 14,133,558 units.

A Long Legal Battle That May Not Even Be Over

Sonos and Google have been filing lawsuits against each other since 2020 where Sonos alleged that Google knowingly infringed upon five separate patents for wireless speaker syncing. Following this initial lawsuit, Google followed off with a countersue claiming that Sonos infringed on Google’s hot word detection and wireless charging so it’s possible they may try to pull another countersue again after this loss. Either way it’s just two big companies fighting and for us it’s just fun to watch.
