Google forced to stop Nexus 7 16GB sales

Google clearly wasn’t prepared for the amount of demand the Nexus 7 has received. Demand for the 16GB variant has been blisteringly high compared to the Nexus 7 8GB which has suffered relatively low demand – great news for Google considering the 16GB model nets Google an even larger profit margin.

It is not just Google that have been feeling the ultra high demand, most retailers across the globe have run out of stock too. As a result Google have decided to temporarily pull the Nexus 7 16GB tablet from the UK and US Google Play Stores. Orders placed up until the end of last week, Friday the 20th, will be fulfilled.

The removal of course is temporary, but the issue for Google here is that it doesn’t want to look bad by not fulfilling orders so it will keep the 16GB model off the Google Play Store listings until it has enough stock to start selling them again. The 8GB model of the Nexus 7 is relatively abundant, and we are not really sure whether demand will increase with the 16GB model now not available, but if you want a Nexus 7 then you can pick up one of those still.

However, If you want that 16GB version, you’ll have to “sign up to be notified by e-mail” when it becomes available, according to Google’s Play Store. Even though the Nexus 7 is sold out in its 16GB variant, the company haven’t released any sales numbers, so its unknown whether Google have sold hundreds of thousands or millions. The sales figures will certainly make interesting reading when published.
