Google Home Max Has AUX Port Latency Issues

Google Home Max is the much larger, high-end AI speaker from Google’s smart speaker line. Aside from having all the Google Home product features, it targets audiophiles with its capabilities. It features some advanced machine learning features. The device can even calibrate and adjust the optimal listening sound in a room for instance. In fact, Google claims that it adjusts almost immediately so users can move in anywhere they please. They are calling this feature “Smart Sound”.

The product is Google’s bid to go head to head against Sonos, Bose and even Apple’s upcoming HomePod. It even almost looks like a classic Apple product with its minimal design. Two 4.5-inch woofers surrounded by several tweeters are hidden beneath the fabric grille. It has a USB-C port, Wireless and Bluetooth connectivity. Moreover, it has one thing which a lot of smart home speakers lack: a 3.5mm AUX port.

AUX Port Problems

Despite the impressive feature set, it appears this AUX port in unusable. Especially by the pros that Google is marketing this product to. According to Variety, there is a slight delay from this line-in port, rendering it painfully difficult to use by DJs. Timing is essential for live music and latency can affect it severely.

The Home Max with its feature set understandably goes for quite a bit more at $499 USD. However, this problem is affecting a huge number of users which Google is trying to attract. They even tapped Diplo for the promotion of the device.

Google is apparently now aware of the issue and released a statement. “The delay is in regards to how long it takes for the music to start playing, and does not affect synchronization of sound across home devices – which is near perfect for most setups.”.
