Google Say Tablet Makers Need To Step Up Their Game

Android has been steadily gaining ground in the tablet market, given them a huge share of the market and leaving Apple with their lowest tablet market share in history, but for Google’s VP, Hugo Barra, that is not enough and he thinks that they can do even better, if only people would pick up the slack.

Hugo was recently interviewed by The Verge, where he was discussing his thoughts on the state of the tablet market and the progress of Android.

“I really do think that the Android ecosystem hasn’t yet put its best foot forward, when it comes to tablets,” he said.

He doesn’t think that hardware makers are doing a good enough job, saying that while companies like HTC make the best of the OS with unique tweaks and features, many other markers rarely bother. I have to admit I fully agree with him here, I personally use a HTC device and it’s full of little tricks that work well with Android, but device manufacturers, HTC included, seem stuck on the gimmick features that may be cool, yet we don’t actually need. Has there really been much genuine innovation in the tablet and mobile market recently?

But is it really just down to hardware markers to push the boundaries and use all that is on offer from the flexible OS, or should Google be creating the basis to push them forward? It’s easily debatable but there is no denying that there a countless amounts of cheap tablet devices out there, some better than others. Even Google’s own Nexus devices don’t see widespread popularity at the moment, at least when compared to iPads, all while cheaper and less innovative devices still thrive.
