Those who have a GoPro Hero 5 Black will be happy to hear that their camera just got a significant functional upgrade in the form of overlaid telemetry and GPS data. This telemetry feature can display information such as altitude, speed, elevation gain, G-force, and even generates a map based on the GPS information.
Overview of the telemetry data:
Info Cluster: See an overview of real-time stats as you watch your video
Speed:
GPS Path: See the route you took and pinpoint your position as you move along the path
G-Force: Check out how much g-force you’re pulling against as you accelerate or change direction
This overlay is done via the desktop Quick version 2.1 application when saving as a new clip. Currently, it does not work when exported to Facebook or YouTube directly, but hopefully a future update will enable this feature. For now, this is a handy sort-of “benchmark” for activity and is useful for those who want to monitor their performance for improvement.
Go Pro is a bit late in this function since this feature has been available in competitor Garmin’s cameras for over two years now such as the VIRB Ultra 30 which has been widely used by extreme sports enthusiasts and mountaineers, but it is a step in the right direction that should please many of GoPro’s core enthusiast audience who live a very active outdoor lifestyle.
