GTA 5 Runs Natively on the Original Nintendo Switch Thanks to Its Leaked Source Code

GTA 5

Grand Theft Auto 5 can now run completely natively on the hardware of the original Nintendo Switch. The technical achievement was developed by the independent programming group Paralympics Productions. The team has managed to bring the game to the console’s processor without using emulators or external compatibility layers.

To make this conversion possible, the developers used the game’s source code leaked in 2023, known within the project as the Legacy version. Using these files, they applied reverse engineering to recompile all the internal logic for the ARM architecture. In this way, the instructions are processed directly on the hybrid console’s Tegra X1 chip.

The game’s performance changes noticeably depending on the speed at which the processor runs. With the clock speeds that the console uses from the factory, the frame rate is quite low. Under these standard conditions, performance ranges between 10 and 25 FPS, making it difficult to maintain smooth gameplay.

GTA 5 Hits 30 FPS on the Original Nintendo Switch

To achieve a stable frame rate close to 30 FPS, it is necessary to have a modified console and apply overclocking. The developers use management tools such as sys-clk to increase the frequency of the CPU, graphics card, and memory beyond the usual limits. This adjustment makes it possible to get more out of the Tegra X1 chip, a component that is more than ten years old and has clear thermal limits.

The complete installation package requires approximately 49 GB of storage space. This figure reflects the amount of data from the original game logic without cuts to its base files. The Paralympics Productions team has already released several updates to fix technical problems and improve the performance of the port on the console.

The original release of this game took place in 2013 for platforms such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Despite its long time on the market, Rockstar Games never released an official version adapted for Nintendo’s system. This community project fills that gap by adapting the code directly for the portable hardware.

Members of the group have confirmed that they are also preparing a version for devices running the Android operating system. The possibility of this work is entirely due to the availability of the developer’s leaked source code. For this reason, this project should not be seen as a sign that games like GTA 6 will officially come to Nintendo’s next console.
