Reviewers across the globe are currently busy testing AMD’s new HD 7970 graphics card in time for its expected launch within the new few weeks, or maybe even few days if speculation about a December 22nd is true. As part of each reviewers testing they are given a ‘Reviewers Guide’ which contains basic principles of testing and performance expectations of the card. And as a result the graph below has been obtained from the AMD HD 7970 reviewers guide according to sources at 3DCenter. Essentially the graph states the HD 7970 outperforms the GTX 580 by around 30% minimum to a 60% maximum depending on the game.
But there is particular thing worth noting here is that the testing was done at the 2560 by 1600 resolution which is where Nvidia’s performance tends to drop off more than AMD’s does. Consequently any particular gaps between AMD and Nvidia seem narrowed at this resolution. Not to mention the fact AMD often tends to overstate its figures. We wouldn’t be surprised if this new card is only about 20-50% faster (not 30-60%) taken into consideration all the potential impurities in the data.
