Hideo Kojima Believes AI Will Be Able to Create Remakes and Sequels in the Future
The use of artificial intelligence in video game development is nothing new. Many studios already use it to optimize time and resources. But how far can its creative contribution really go?
According to Hideo Kojima, we will reach a point where the creation of remakes and sequels of established works can be handled directly by AI, allowing developers to focus on making new and original content.
AI Taking Over Remakes and Sequels
In an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil, Kojima explained that from a commercial point of view, there is nothing wrong with focusing on sequels and remakes — a logic that applies to both video games and movies.
Since these are already known works, they are easier to develop, fund, and sell. However, he emphasized that too much dependence on familiar formulas can stifle creativity and slow down innovation.
This led to his idea: letting future AI handle the creation of remakes and sequels, while human creativity focuses on producing new and original projects.
The Risk of Over-Reliance on Old Ideas
“I’m often asked what I think about the gaming industry releasing so many sequels, but this isn’t exclusive to games,” Kojima said. “Cinema does the same with remakes and reboots. Since they’re already well-known works, it’s easier to produce them and attract investment. From a business perspective, there’s nothing wrong with that.”
“But if the industry only does that, it’s dangerous. We need to keep creating new things. I think in the future, remakes and sequels will be done by AI.”
