The video game series Horizon — which so far includes Zero Dawn, Forbidden West and Call of the Mountain — is certainly one of the major successes of Sony over the last couple of generations, but just how big is it?
Sales Figures of Horizon
According to recent estimates, the series has surpassed 40 million units sold. The figure comes from a Korean outlet which suggested that Horizon sold around two million units in recent months; legal documents from the Sony vs Tencent case listed the series at about 38 million units.
The Korean report was part of a dossier on the upcoming MMO Horizon Steel Frontiers being developed by the South Korean company NCSoft. These numbers underscore both the value of the Horizon franchise and the interest in Steel Frontiers from developers and publishers alike.
To give context for these results: for example, the series God of War (2018) sold over 23 million units according to 2022 data, while its sequel crossed 15 million units as of November 2023.
Considering that Horizon had fewer major entries but has the backing of Sony and the developer Guerrilla Games, a total of around 40 million units seems plausible. In short: Sony’s big exclusives are fully capable of achieving these kinds of numbers over the long term.
