Following news of NetFlix raising their prices again, competitor Hulu is announcing that they are lowering theirs. At least when it comes to their entry-level plan. And only for a limited time only until January 2018. For $5.99 USD a month, the amount is small enough that even current NetFlix subscribers could be enticed to sign-up. Think of it as a lower-price trail mode. However, they will require a lot more than that if they truly want to compete directly against NetFlix.
Despite boasting an expanded library which includes current many TV seasons currently airing, the basic plan from Hulu still includes ads. Meanwhile, even the most basic plan at NetFlix is completely ad-free.
Prices in the UK for NetFlix start at a basic subscription of £5.99. This provides non-HD, single stream service and is unchanged. The standard service which offers two simultaneous HD viewing is now £9.99 in the UK or $10.99 in the US. The premium service is only £9.99 in the UK and $13.99 per month. However, this lets up to four users stream up to 4K resolutions.
In comparison, Hulu offers their service to the US only. UK users can use a VPN however. The basic $5.99 pricing lasts for only a year. If subscribers want to keep the account, it will revert to $7.99 USD-per-month after. Hulu’s to-end premium account is also much more expensive than NetFlix at $40 USD a month. However, it offers live TV viewing similar to cable and includes ad-free original programming.
