Hynix Develops World’s First 8Gb LPDDR3 RAM Chips

Low Power DDR3 modules are going to be vital to the future of the mobile markets as they allow for large capacities of DRAM to be attached to small mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. SK Hynix have been innovating in this market segment recently being the first to create 8 Gigabit LPDDR3 modules, that is 1GB LPDDR3 modules to you and me. SK Hynix say these new 1GB LPDDR3 modules can be stacked to a capacity of up to 4GB or 32 Gigabits.

Furthermore SK Hynix are claiming a dramatically reduced height over previous 4 Gigabit LPDDR3 counterparts and rated speeds of 2133 Mbps, or 2133MHz, which surpasses the 1600 Mbps of previous generation LPDDR3 modules – SK Hynix are claiming the world’s fastest DRAM. The 32 bit I/O processes up to 8.5GB of data per second in single channel mode or 17GB per second in dual channel. SK Hynix have managed to get these modules functional with just 1.2 volts.

These new modules from Hynix can be used in PoP (package on package), eMMC (embedded multi-media card) and on-board form factors. They make use of the latest advanced 20nm memory process. Hynix expects these new modules to hit the market in smartphones and other mobile devices by the end of the year.
