Intel i5 2550K on the way?

According to sources at CPU World the latest Intel roadmap pointed to the idea that there would be no new Sandy Bridge i5 processors and that they would all be replaced by Ivy Bridge processors in early to mid 2012. However, in today’s update of the Material Declaration Data Sheets database this entry came up:

We know very little about the 2550K as its release was not on any Intel roadmap or documentation but what we do know is this must of been a very recent decision made by Intel. Probably to give i5 Sandy Bridge processors a little bit of extra help in fending off the higher end Bulldozers which fall into a similar price-performance bracket. There is no information on the specifications at all but using common sense and some past trends in Intel’s naming patterns we can probably assume the 2550K will be a 2500K speed binned for better overclocking and with a higher stock clock.

The stock frequency is likely to be raised from 3.3GHz to 3.4GHz, the Turbo frequency will probably rise from 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz but apart from those two changes everything else should be the same as the 2500K. That is, the processor will have unlocked clock multiplier, 6 MB L3 cache, HD 3000 graphics, support for Turbo Boost technology, and 95 Watt TDP. We expect the launch date will be sooner rather than later as Intel wants to bury Bulldozer for good.
