Intel and BOE Introduce 1Hz Dynamic Refresh Rate Displays With AI Energy-Saving Tech

intel

Intel and BOE have teamed up to bring laptops with dynamic refresh rate displays that go as low as 1Hz, using smart energy-saving technology.

Intel and BOE announced a new partnership to introduce ultra-efficient display technologies designed to extend laptop battery life. The companies will present dynamic refresh rate screens (down to 1Hz) and AI-powered systems that adjust energy use in real-time depending on what’s on the screen.

BOE, one of the world’s largest producers of LCD and OLED panels, introduced its Winning Display 1Hz technology last year, which can cut power use by up to 65%. Now, through integration with Intel platforms, this solution will be used in the next generation of laptops, expected to hit the market in 2026.

Dynamic Refresh Rate for Smarter Power Use

The new technology allows the display’s refresh rate to drop as low as 1Hz when showing static content, such as documents or idle windows. It then automatically increases the rate during activities like video playback or gaming.

This smart system is powered by Intel’s Multi-Frequency Display (MFD), which coordinates between the graphics driver and the operating system to adjust the refresh rate when needed. Complementing this is SmartPower HDR, designed to fine-tune screen brightness and voltage. When dark areas appear on the screen, the system reduces backlight brightness to save energy while keeping high visual quality.

According to Todd Lewellen, Intel’s Vice President and General Manager of the PC Ecosystem, this collaboration marks an important step toward building smarter and more sustainable laptops hat provide a premium experience with lower energy impact.

Meng Xiangxing, General Manager of BOE’s laptop division, added that these joint innovations not only reduce power use but also improve visual clarity and flexibility, laying the foundation for the AI PC era.

With variable refresh rate, AI-based management, and smart HDR control, these new displays represent a major leap in energy efficiency for the laptops of the future.
