A recent case caught the attention of the PC hardware community after an Intel Core i9-13900K was reported running at an incredible 155°C while using only 93W of power.
At first, these numbers make it look like the processor suffered a serious cooling failure or permanent damage. However, the reading does not show what was actually happening.

The main reason there is no need to worry is that modern Intel processors include built-in safety features. The Raptor Lake architecture has strict hardware protection, with the processor’s thermal throttling limit set to 100°C by default. If the chip had really reached 155°C, the PROCHOT protection system would have immediately shut down the computer to prevent permanent damage.
There is also another issue with the reported numbers. A power draw of 93W is quite low for the Core i9-13900K, a processor that can easily go above 250W under full load. Any decent air cooler or liquid cooling system can handle 93W without trouble, making a temperature reading of 155°C highly unlikely.
The most likely explanation is a temporary problem with the processor’s Digital Thermal Sensors (DTS), a monitoring software error, or an issue with the motherboard’s BIOS or microcode.
If your system continues to run normally, does not suddenly shut down, and does not suffer major drops in clock speeds, then your processor is most likely working safely despite the incorrect temperature reading.
