Intel to Debut AR Headset Next Month

Intel is set to unveil a new HoloLens-esque augmented reality (AR) headset next month. Dubbed Remote EyeSight, Intel’s AR offering uses the company’s Collaboration Suite for WebRTC and will debut at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco on 16th August. While Intel has only released one image of the headset (above), it seems to be a combination of Microsoft’s HoloLens AR device and Google Glass.

“Intel Remote EyeSight (IRES) is a head-worn Smart (AR) Glasses solution that [is built] around Intel Collaboration Suite for WebRTC video capabilities to transform Intel’s enterprise collaboration experiences w/ secure, cost effective, hands-free and augmented reality technologies for improving collaboration efficiencies and reducing costs,” the introduction to the August event reads.

Intel’s Remote EyeSight appears to be more advanced than the company’s existing smart glasses, the Recon Jet, which is designed to help athletes to access GPS maps, monitor speed, distance travelled, and heart rate while training. While the two headsets bear a superficial similarity, Jet Recon does not feature AR elements, merely a HUD projection in the glasses.

The move into AR follows a number of related purchases by Intel over the past few months; back in March, Intel bought Replay, developer of freeD technology, which renders sports events in three dimensions. Following the purchase, Intel was reported to be adapting the technology to build a VR or AR headset.
