Intel to end X58’s long life in 2012

The enthusiast X58 platform is to finally be retired a year from today after serving the computer market since 2008. This essentially means the end of all older socket 1366 CPU production and X58 chipset/motherboard production. In 12 months Intel will give the X58 platform the dreaded EOL status (End-Of-Life) as its X79 successor looks to take over the reigns. Current pricing for the X58 chipset stands at $39 for the NorthBridge and $14 for the SouthBridge, which means that although the X58 isn’t the cheapest platform it is certainly one of the better performers out there. Although this is the end of the Nehalem/Tylersburg based platform, it is out with the old and in with the new as Intel presses on ahead with its X79 Sandy-Bridge-E/Patsburg platform which will bring even more performance and hopefully fill the big shoes left by X58. The official cut of date is October the 5th 2012. With regards to the successor, Intel plans to launch X79 next month with 3 LGA 2011 processors alongside that.
