Intel is getting rather experienced with its gamer/enthusiast targeted motherboards as it brings in its third X79 motherboard. The board was revealed to the press not by Intel but Nvidia, who paired this particular motherboard with their GTX 690 in the press release pictures. The DX79SR is the “highest” board in the Intel X79 Extreme motherboard series above the DX79SI and then the DX79TO. With respect to the DX79SI (which you can see full specifications of here) the DX79SR adds two additional SATA III 6GB/s storage ports which are driven by a Marvell SE9128 2-port controller and two more USB 3.0 ports via the rear input/output panel.
Intel will be bundling a USB add on module with provides 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 as well as an Intel mouse pad and thermal probe. The first and second PCI-Express x16 slots no longer have switches between them, and some capacitors appear changed. With these changes Intel thinks this board should retail at $299 compared to the $249 for the DX79SI and $199 for the DX79TO. That pricing puts Intel’s DX79SR board in competiton with other X79 boards like Gigabyte’s UD5, MSI’s GD-65, Asrock’s Fatal1ty and ASUS’ Maximus IV Extreme.
