IO Interactive Updates James Bond’s Character to Reflect “Modern Values”
IO Interactive has announced that they have modified some of James Bond’s traditional traits in 007 First Light, as certain aspects might be seen as “inappropriate” for today’s audiences.
Cinematic director Martin Emborg explained that while the charming and charismatic Bond fans know will still be present, this version will also be a “modern guy” who reflects “modern values.”
The changes mainly concern Bond’s relationships with women. In the original 1960s films, the character often displayed attitudes that would no longer align with today’s cultural sensitivity.
A Modern Take on a Classic Character

Although the cinematic version of Bond has already evolved over the years, 007 First Light introduces a younger James Bond, one closer in spirit to his early adventures on the big screen.
This has created a challenge for the developers, who needed to balance updates carefully so that the changes remain subtle yet meaningful.
According to Emborg, the essential traits of James Bond are still there, including some of his flirtatious nature, but the character has evolved. He reflects today’s world — he’s no longer the old-school Bond that would feel out of place now. He’s a modern man.
Patrick Gibson, who portrays Bond in the game, will still deliver a recognizable version of the iconic spy. Emborg noted that the animation and combat system remain distinctly Bond-like:
“It’s really physical because Bond is a very physical guy. It’s a lot of fun, and I think that’s something that IO hadn’t done before. I think we’ve also put layers and layers on our ranged combat,” he said.
007 First Light has been delayed and is now scheduled for release on May 27, 2026.
In other news, IO Interactive has confirmed that more Hitman games are coming after 007: First Light.
