The first sales data for the new iPhone 17 lineup are in. According to early estimates from research firm Counterpoint Research, which analyzed the first ten days on the market, the standard model has become a major success, while the debut of the new iPhone Air is proving more modest than expected.
The iPhone 17 Becomes a Market Leader
The star of the show is the 6.3-inch iPhone 17. This model not only follows in the footsteps of its popular predecessor, the iPhone 16, but has also exceeded all expectations. Combining figures from China and the United States, the iPhone 17 shows a combined growth of 31%.
In fact, when it comes to deciding which iPhone to buy this year, there is no doubt that the base version is the best option. This is mainly due to the improvements in display, storage, and camera performance introduced this year.
Mixed Results for the Rest of the Lineup
The situation is different for the rest of the family. The high-end models, iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, have also seen better numbers, but their growth is more moderate — with a combined 12% increase compared to the previous generation. However, the biggest question mark revolves around the iPhone Air.
Although the iPhone Air sold 14% more than the model it replaced (iPhone 16 Plus), the figures suggest that the product remains niche and has not achieved the impact Apple likely expected.
Adding to that, its commercial launch in China was delayed, which may have affected its initial performance. For now, while the base model is thriving, the iPhone Air seems to be struggling to find its place in the market.
