Ivy Bridge delay only for dual core mobile CPUs

The last few days has seen a fair amount of speculation suggesting that Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors would be delayed until mid 2012 instead of arriving in April. However, it now seems that this speculation was taken out of context and that only dual core Ivy Bridge mobile processors will be delayed. This means that we will still see the launch of the desktop series of Ivy Bridge in April along with a substantial amount of OEM BGA Quad core mobile processors. So this is good news for enthusiasts, Ivy Bridge is still on target.

The reason for the delay in the dual core mobile processors is because current levels of stock for Sandy Bridge dual core mobile processors are so high that if Intel was to release Ivy Bridge dual cores it might not be able to shift the older Sandy Bridge dual cores. This is compounded by the fact Intel has high levels of Sandy Bridge BGA dual core processors in its own warehouses as well as its partner’s warehouses being saturated with them as well. The hard drive crisis may indeed be to blame, dual core Sandy Bridge mobile processors are targeted at entry level laptops, and given the steep rise in hard drive prices the entry level laptop isn’t a cheap as it used to be which could have seriously implicated on sales resulting in Intel having large amounts of excess supply.
