James Cameron Says He’ll Reveal Avatar’s Ending If Parts 4 and 5 Aren’t Made
If Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 never make it to theaters, director James Cameron has promised to reveal how the saga ends. The filmmaker made this commitment, somewhat provocatively, to reassure millions of fans eager to see the story conclude.
In fact, both films already have completed scripts and planned release dates — currently set for 2029 and 2031. However, their actual production will depend on how well Avatar: Fire and Ash performs at the box office.
“If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?” Cameron told Entertainment Weekly, seemingly unfazed by the weight of such a promise.
Alternative Ways to End the Story
In the past, the director had considered telling the future stories of Avatar in novel form, but that idea was eventually dropped for a rather simple — and slightly concerning — reason: “People aren’t reading,” Cameron said.
Recently, Cameron admitted that Avatar 4 and 5 might never be made. However, these comments appear to have motivated many fans to visit theaters, judging by the strong box office performance of Fire and Ashes during its first week of release.
Although the numbers are currently lower than The Way of Water, reaching the billion-dollar milestone still seems possible. Achieving that goal could ultimately secure the green light for the production of the final two installments in the saga.
