Japan Display Announces A New 5.4-inch Smartphone Screen

Japan Display has just announced a new smartphone screen, boasting the highest pixel per inch count on a pretty large, phablet-worthy footprint. It is just 5.4-inches in diagonal, and gives a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, resulting in an unmatched pixel density of 543 pixels per inch. That’s the highest ppi count we’ve ever seen on a smartphone display, and it’s quite impressive.

What is this magic display you ask? It is a TFT LCD module that reportedly enables low power consumption thanks to the increased panel transitivity. It has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, and a 160 degree viewing angle (CR>100:1). In case you’re not aware of this, Japan Display is a merged business that has been created back in 2011 by Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba, in conjunction with the “Innovation Network Corporation of Japan”. Meaning, chances are that this clear-crystal  5.4 inch WQHD display will be adopted on a Sony smartphone at first, and afterwards (maybe) be available on other brands as well.

To also be note is that Japan Display has lifted the veil on a different panel that boasts the same resolution, but clocks in at a lower pixel density with only 473 ppi due to its larger, 6.2 inch footprint.
