Japan Finally Gets a Cheaper PS5, Fans Celebrate the Long-Awaited Move
Sony has released a new PS5 version exclusive to the Japanese market at a much lower price than before.
As a result, according to posts on social media, many players have finally managed to buy the console, since the new price makes it much more affordable.
Japanese Fans React to the Price Drop
Online, there are plenty of comments and posts from Japanese users celebrating their PS5 purchase after years of waiting.
When the PS5 launched in 2020, it sold well initially. However, as the yen weakened and prices went up, many gamers couldn’t afford it for years.
According to reports from PushSquare, Sony’s previous leadership didn’t seem concerned about weak sales in Japan. But the new CEO, Hideaki Nishino—who is Japanese—found it “uncomfortable” that PlayStation wasn’t doing well in its home country.
To solve this, Sony took a similar approach to Nintendo’s Switch 2, which offers a Japan-only version at a lower price.
The New Price and Market Outlook
The price difference is significant. The PS5 Digital Edition dropped from ¥72,980 (around $460) to ¥55,000 (around $350). With potential extra discounts, the console is now far cheaper.
Even so, it may still be difficult for PS5 to surpass Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in Japanese sales. However, this price cut should help Sony keep its console competitive in the domestic market.
In other news, Sony has introduced a new official PlayStation 27-inch Gaming Monitor with DualSense Charging Hook that features a QHD resolution display and a built-in hook to charge your controller.
