Japanese Resellers Are Already Hoarding MicroSD Cards Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2
As you may know, during the recent Nintendo Direct, which lasted about an hour, Nintendo revealed new details about the Nintendo Switch 2, including its release date of June 5. They also shared information about the console’s compatibility with MicroSD Express cards. However, regular MicroSD cards will not be supported, except for loading certain types of files, mainly images and videos.
The good news is that MicroSD Express cards offer much faster reading and writing speeds than standard cards. The downside, however, is that they are more expensive and less common than regular MicroSD cards. This is because not everyone needs such high-performance cards for their devices.
Despite this, just one day after the announcement, Japanese resellers have already started hoarding MicroSD Express cards, inflating their prices further.
Scarcity and Price Inflation in Japan
According to the Japanese publication GameSpark, most online retailers in Japan have already sold out of MicroSD Express cards. These cards have started appearing in large numbers on Amazon and local e-commerce platforms, with listings often going for double the standard price.
Nintendo has taken steps to limit reseller activities related to the Nintendo Switch 2, including a Japanese edition with regional lockout and strict reservation limits. However, these measures have not protected related products, such as MicroSD Express cards, which users will need to purchase if they want additional storage for their games and data. Hopefully, the situation will normalize before the console’s release.
