Jeeps Hacked to Control Steering Wheels

As more and more of our technology becomes interconnected with our daily lives, there are always risks that the security from the technology will put us at risk. This is becoming even greater as security researchers begin to research the use of remote controlling technology within cars, something which has now resulted in a huge revelation about Jeeps with remote driving abilities.

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek have a history of hacking “smart” vehicles after hacking the Fiat Chrysler and exploiting them to apply the brakes mid drive. Now they’ve gone and done worse with the Jeep Cherokees, applying more than just the brakes as they demonstrated their ability to turn on the parking brake or mess with the cruise control system or at worst they even managed to hijack the auto-parking systems resulting in a dangerous 180-degree turn of the vehicles steering wheel mid drive.

The defects that resulted in these dangers hs now been fixed and requires a direct correction to the onboard systems. This means that the hackers need to have physical access to the cars systems before they can do all of these dangerous hacks.

Violet Blue, Engadget’s security expert, tweeted that she was less than impressed with the “non-threat”.
