Just Cause 5 Might Have Been Cancelled, Project Was in Development for Two Years
It looks like Just Cause 5 has been cancelled by Square Enix. According to an ex-developer’s LinkedIn profile from Sumo Digital, the game was in development between 2021 and 2023 before it was officially marked as “cancelled.” The game was being worked on in collaboration with Avalanche Studios, the creators of the Just Cause series, but it seems the Japanese company decided to stop the project earlier than planned.
The Struggles of the Franchise
The last game in the series, Just Cause 4, came out in 2018 and didn’t perform as expected, both commercially and critically. It had a Metascore lower than anticipated and didn’t receive much love from players, which delayed any plans for a new installment. However, in 2022, Square Enix confirmed that a new Just Cause game was in development, hoping to revive the franchise. Sadly, this hope seems to have faded over time.
To make things worse, Just Cause Mobile was cancelled in 2023, marking the end of a period filled with failed projects. With no formal announcement of Just Cause 5 and its likely cancellation, the future of the series seems uncertain.
