Large shipments of 28nm AMD GPUs by the end of the year

According to sources at Fudzilla there may be a 2011 launch for AMD’s 28nm Southern Island based graphics cards. Although they won’t be widely available until early 2012 but this is a a slight deviation from the plan. The initial idea was for a Q1 or Q2 2012 launch to fully exploit the remaining commercial potential of the HD 6000 series. However, it appears AMD’s new CEO is on a mission after cutting 10% of jobs at AMD to free up revenue for more investment and product development. Part of his plan is to raise confidence in AMD’s investors and an early launch of HD 7000 series GPUs could do exactly that. It is very likely we could see a launch of at least one card by the end of the year but the high end chips will come in late Q1 and early Q2 as the 28nm process for these is more challenging.

The report also confirms the thinking that Nvidia will not launch their 28nm equivalents until Intel launches Ivy Bridge in Q2 of 2012 so AMD has the possibility for as much as a 3 month head start on graphics card sales.
