Lawsuit Deems Rightscorp’s Robo-Calls Illegal

A class action lawsuit has been filed that accuses copyright enforcement company Rightcorp of making harassing robo-calls to people accused of illegally downloading copyrighted materials. Should Rightscorp be found guilty, they will been found to have broken the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) of 1991, which controls how autodialing services are used.

The lawyer behind the lawsuit, Morgan Pietz, spoke about Rightcorp’s violations, saying, in regard to one of his clients, “They robo-called Jeanie Reif’s cell phone darn near every day for a couple of months, and there could be thousands of members of this class.”

If the ruling goes against Rightscorp, they could be liable to pay millions of dollars in compensation. Since the company is estimated to be worth $6.5 million, it could drive them into insolvency.
