Lenovo Recalls 5th Gen ThinkPad X1 Laptop Due to Fire Hazard

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Laptops: A Fire Hazard

A product recall has been issued in the US and Canada regarding Lenovo‘s ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop. Specifically, it affects the 5th generation version available in silver and black with machine type 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3 or 20K4. This includes devices with a manufacturing date from 16/12 through 17/10 (for December 2016 through October 2017). The serial number as well as the manufacturing date codes are visible at the bottom of the laptop. This laptop originally retails for between $1,100 and $2,600 USD depending on the configuration.

An unfastened screw can damage the battery causing overheating, posing a fire hazard. So far, there are three reports worldwide of overheating resulting in damage. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injury or property damage (beyond the laptop) so far. There are also zero reports so far in the United States and Canada, but Lenovo is not taking any chances. This recall affects approximately 78,000 units sold in the US and 5,519 units sold in Canada.
