Earlier this year, two social media accounts belonging to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg were hacked – in the very loosest sense of the word “hacked”, since Zuckerberg himself was to blame for reusing a bad password on both Twitter and Pinterest – by guerrilla online ‘security’ team OurMine. Now, that same team has again gained access to Zuckerberg’s Pinterest, supposedly in the interest of security.
Following the hack, Zuckerberg’s Pinterest profile read (verbatim):
Hacked By OurMine (Read the description)
Ourmine.org
Hey, it’s OurMine. don’t worry we are just testing your security. please contact us to tell you more about that and help you to keep your accounts safe.
According to ZDNet, this hack is different from the last one launched against Zuckerberg; when his Twitter and Pinterest accounts were compromised earlier this year, it was because he had reused the password “dadada,” which has surfaced thanks to a LinkedIn account data dump from 2012, while this time the group claims to have found “a [sic] exploit on Pinterest.”
While OurMine wants to position itself as some kind of white-hat hacker collective that is only trying to expose poor online security, others in the field doubt that motive.
“I am more dismayed that the OurMine team, who has claimed responsibility, has used the claim that they were just testing security,” Cris Thomas, Strategist for Tenable Network Security, told Forbes after Zuckerberg’s last hack. “No legitimate security researcher would ever test security in this manner. This promotes the stereotype that all hackers are bad and makes it increasingly difficult for researchers who do legitimate security work.”
