Marvel VS Capcom Infinite

It’s been a rough year for Capcom. Despite having a reasonable strong final quarter to 2017, the studio has for a long time failed to find a massive breakout title.

There was, of course, Resident Evil 7 last year, but even that is woefully short of sales expectations. It seems, however, that Marvel VS Capcom infinite is not only a failure with the fans but also with the sales figures.

Poor sales figures

In a report via Eurogamer, since it’s September release, Marvel VS Capcom infinite has sold just 1 million copies. While on the surface this might not sound too bad, Capcom expected to sell 2 million.

It therefore similarly matches Resident Evil 7 is selling only half the units expected.

Reason for the failure

I have actually played MVC Infinite and as such, I can entirely understand why the game has struggled. Firstly, it’s built-in roster only has 30 characters. Yes, not a bad amount, but most of these are uninspired or ones we have seen too much of in previous iterations.

Secondly, and this is a major criticism shared by many, the game just looks bland. Yes, of course, there are a lot of flashing lights and bling factors in this game, but specifically, the character models just look phoned-in. A fighting game like this is supposed to blow us away, this one simply is mediocre, at best.

DLC

Additional characters have been added in DLC packs and in fairness, they do look massively better than the standard ones. That in itself to me though is sloppy. The DLC highlights what this game should have been. The differences between the 2 stand out massively and that doesn’t help the game’s representation in the slightest.
