Micron 9650 Becomes the First PCIe 6.0 SSD With Speeds Up to 28 GB/s

Micron has announced the start of production for the Micron 9650, the world’s first SSD based on the PCIe 6.0 interface.

This is not just a normal performance upgrade. It is a major step forward designed to meet the growing demands of artificial intelligence and next-generation data centers.

Micron 9650 Becomes the First PCIe 6.0 SSD With Speeds Up to 28 GB/s

The Micron 9650 delivers transfer speeds of up to 28 GB/s in sequential read and 14 GB/s in sequential write. Compared to the previous PCIe 5.0 generation, this represents a 100% increase in read speed. This improvement helps remove storage as a bottleneck between processors and data.

In addition, the drive offers up to 5.5 million IOPS in random reads, making it suitable for heavy workloads that require fast and constant access to data.

Despite its high performance, Micron has also focused on efficiency. The 9650 provides up to twice the energy efficiency of earlier models, delivering more performance per watt consumed.

To adapt to different infrastructure needs, the Micron 9650 will be available in two versions:

  • 9650 PRO, optimized for read-intensive workloads, with capacities of up to 30.72 TB.
  • 9650 MAX, designed for mixed-use workloads, with capacities of up to 25.6 TB.

Micron has also ensured that the SSD supports both air cooling and liquid cooling. This allows systems to maintain stable maximum performance without temperature issues.
