Micron Begins Construction of Its Massive RAM Factory in New York to Help Prevent Shortages by 2030

The current surge in memory prices, driven by the growing demand for Artificial Intelligence systems, has significantly increased the cost of RAM modules and all types of devices that rely on this technology. The rapid rise in demand has caught memory manufacturers off guard, making it difficult for them to meet orders and causing prices to climb to record levels.

Micron’s New Factories Aim to Solve the Global Memory Shortage

Micron Technology has officially announced that construction of its new megafactory for memory chips in New York will begin on January 16, 2026. After successfully completing environmental reviews and securing the necessary permits, the company is ready to start preparing the site — marking one of the largest private investments in New York State history and one of the biggest chip manufacturing projects in the United States.

The total investment will reach 100 billion dollars, covering the creation of four separate factories dedicated to producing memory chips. These facilities are expected to significantly increase the global supply of RAM, particularly for advanced Artificial Intelligence systems, helping to meet the rapidly growing market demand.

Despite the excitement surrounding the project, Micron’s first factory won’t be operational until the third quarter of 2030. The initial phase of construction — which begins with land clearing and tree removal — marks the start of a long-term development plan. The second, third, and fourth factories are expected to begin production in 2033, 2037, and 2041, respectively.

Meanwhile, the current shortage continues to push RAM prices upward, with experts predicting further increases throughout 2026. The situation may worsen by the second quarter of the year as demand continues to exceed supply.
