Micron Shuts Down Crucial Brand, Exits Consumer SSD and DRAM Market to Focus on AI
Micron has announced that it will no longer sell products under its Crucial brand, which has long catered to home consumers. This means that Crucial memory modules (RAM) and SSD drives for PCs will no longer be produced. The reason, unsurprisingly, lies in the high demand for memory and storage driven by artificial intelligence workloads in professional data centers.
“The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage,” said Sumit Sadana, an executive at Micron. “Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments.”
A Farewell to Loyal Consumers
The company thanked its “passionate community” of consumers as it shifts focus toward artificial intelligence and enterprise solutions.
“We would like to thank our millions of customers, hundreds of partners and all of the Micron team members who have supported the Crucial journey for the last 29 years,” Micron said in a statement.
Micron has not yet revealed how many employees will be laid off but emphasized that it will seek internal relocation opportunities to minimize job losses.
Micron’s Plan to Strengthen Its Core Business
Crucial products will continue to ship until the end of Micron’s fiscal second quarter of 2026, which runs through February 2026. Product warranties will still be honored, and remaining stock will continue to be sold while supplies last.
Micron stated that this move reflects its commitment to transforming its portfolio and aligning its business with long-term, profitable growth opportunities in memory and storage.
“By concentrating on core enterprise and commercial segments, Micron aims to improve long-term business performance and create value for strategic customers as well as stakeholders,” the company concluded.
