Micron to Acquire a 300,000-Square-Meter Factory from PSMC in Taiwan to Boost DRAM Production
Micron, one of the leading memory chip manufacturers, has announced its plan to expand its production capacity by purchasing a massive factory in Taiwan from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). This acquisition, valued at 1.8 billion dollars, aims to meet the growing global demand for DRAM memory chips driven by artificial intelligence and data center expansion.
Recently, Micron also began construction of new facilities in New York dedicated to memory chip production. The company has greatly benefited from the surge in demand for memory components, which has led to unprecedented price increases in RAM due to the massive investments in AI and data infrastructure.
Expanding Capacity to Meet Global Demand
The newly acquired factory spans 300,000 square meters and will be used by Micron to increase its DRAM production. However, the company stated that the facility will not begin producing DRAM chips until the second half of 2027.
While this expansion strengthens Micron’s long-term position in the market, it will not immediately impact current memory prices or alleviate shortages in the short term. The deal is expected to be finalized during the second quarter of this year, marking a key milestone in Micron’s manufacturing growth strategy.
Beyond the acquisition, the agreement opens doors for deeper collaboration between Micron and PSMC. The companies plan to work together on post-processing of Micron’s wafers and to broaden PSMC’s DRAM product catalog through shared technology and expertise.
This partnership underlines Micron’s focus on industrial and enterprise markets. The company recently discontinued its Crucial brand of consumer SSDs and memory, signaling a stronger commitment to the B2B and data center segments.
