Microsoft Accuses Apple of Blocking Xbox Mobile Store Launch on iOS
Microsoft has accused Apple of blocking the launch of its Xbox mobile store on the iOS platform. According to Microsoft, Apple’s policies delayed the debut of the store, even after plans were made starting in 2024. This information comes from a document Microsoft sent to the U.S. courts, where it also showed support for Epic Games in its legal battle against App Store rules.
Apple’s Restrictions on Payment Options
Microsoft claims that Apple prevented users from accessing payment methods outside of the App Store system. Apple introduced rules called “anti-steering,” which stop companies from informing users about these alternative payment options. As a result, Microsoft said that operating on iOS became much more expensive.
Microsoft submitted this document to the court in a case where Apple is trying to change a previous ruling. This ruling allows developers like Epic Games to share links and inform users about different payment methods within iPhone apps. This led to the return of Fortnite to the App Store. Now, Microsoft wants to do the same with its mobile game store.
Apple Blocks Microsoft’s External Link Plan
Microsoft believes that, with the new court ruling, they should be able to offer their store through an external link. This would allow users to buy items outside the app and use them in iPhone games. However, Microsoft said that even this plan was blocked by Apple.
Additionally, Microsoft wants to let players buy and play directly from the Xbox app on iOS. But Apple currently does not allow both of these features together. At the moment, players who want to use cloud gaming have to open the Xbox Cloud Gaming website in their browser, as the Xbox app for iOS doesn’t support this feature.
Finally, Microsoft said that if Apple wins the case, it could easily undo any changes. The company also mentioned that it has experience with app stores and can adapt its solutions if needed.
