Microsoft Does Not Force Xbox Teams to Create AI Games, Says New CEO
Following major leadership changes in Microsoft’s gaming division, several interviews have been released in which the new CEO and CCO explain their plans and address key topics such as the use of artificial intelligence.
Asha Sharma and Matt Booty spoke about the issue in a recent interview, where they clarified Microsoft’s approach to AI in video game development.
No Obligation to Use AI in Game Development
According to Sharma, who until recently held a role closely linked to AI within the company, development teams are under no pressure from management to use artificial intelligence. Studios are free to decide whether or not to adopt this technology during development.
This means that AI is neither required nor banned. Each studio can evaluate for itself whether using AI tools makes sense for its projects.
At the same time, CEO Asha Sharma confirmed that she supports the use of AI, but wants it to be applied in a responsible way. The goal is to avoid so-called “AI slop,” meaning low-quality content generated through artificial intelligence.
This type of content is often seen in spam games that flood major platforms. Microsoft’s position, therefore, is not to push AI at all costs, but to encourage thoughtful and careful use when it truly adds value.
In other news, Original Xbox creator claims Xbox is being “sunsetted” as Microsoft shifts focus to AI, calling the new gaming CEO a “palliative care doctor.”
