Microsoft Expands Xbox Full Screen Experience to All Windows 11 Handhelds
Microsoft has taken another step toward unifying and simplifying the portable gaming ecosystem on Windows. The Xbox Full Screen Experience, which was originally exclusive to the ASUS ROG Ally, is now officially available for all portable devices running Windows 11, including competitors like the Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw, and AYANEO models.
A Console-Like Interface for Windows Handhelds
The Xbox Full Screen Experience aims to transform how players interact with their devices, offering a console-style interface designed specifically for gaming. When enabled, the Xbox app takes full control of the screen at startup, hiding the Windows 11 desktop and minimizing background processes. This setup allows smoother navigation and reduced resource usage.
The main benefit for gamers is more stable performance and better battery life, which is essential for portable gaming. The interface is fully designed for controller use, giving quick access to the Game Pass library and installed games. With this move, Microsoft provides a direct alternative to Valve’s SteamOS.
How to Enable Xbox Full Screen Experience
To activate this feature on compatible devices, users can go to:
Settings > Gaming > Full Screen Experience and set Xbox as the startup application.
This release is not just for handheld gaming devices. Microsoft has also hinted at plans to expand the Xbox Full Screen Experience to desktop and laptop computers with Windows 11, through the Xbox and Windows Insider programs.
It remains to be seen whether the Xbox Full Screen Experience will be strong enough to compete with SteamOS and other gaming-focused systems — but it’s a promising step forward.
