Microsoft is Reportedly the Latest Victim of the Nvidia Hacking Group

If you’ve been paying attention to the tech news over the last month, you’re probably aware that both Nvidia and Samsung have recently been subjected to a pretty significant data breach. For those of you not in the know, however, it can be summed up pretty quickly. A hacking group, known only as ‘LAPSUS$’, claimed that they had successfully stolen a significant amount of highly sensitive information from both organisations. A fact seemingly backed up by the subsequent fact that a lot of that stolen data started getting posted online.

In the latest development to this news, however, following a report via TechPowerUp, fresh information has appeared online that strongly indicates that Microsoft themselves may have become the next high profile victim with a number of their source codes seemingly having been compromised. Albeit, when you hear what has been stolen, you might take some amusement out of the fact that, in the grand scheme of things, this is likely nowhere near as potentially devastating as what has happened with Nvidia and Samsung.

Microsoft Source Code Stolen/Compromised?

Following a new image being published online from the hacking group, it appears to show a Microsoft developers account. Within it, references to the Bing and Cortana source code can clearly be seen. Now, admittedly, given that these two programs are pretty much universally hated by the PC community, and, by proxy, don’t really see much use, the revelations that the source code for these being compromised doesn’t, on the surface, appear to be too alarming.

With that being said, however, with these effectively forming a part of the Windows operating system, it’s hard to deny the possibility that with the source code seemingly in the hands of this hacking group, should it ever go public this would undoubtedly lead to a swell of people looking into it in an attempt to find any potentially backdoor security flaws Microsoft are not currently aware of.

So yes, definitely funny that the hacking group seemingly has the source code to two of Microsoft’s most detested properties. At the same time though, it would be rather flippant for us to suggest that this data couldn’t hold some potential problems in the future. And not just for the tech giant.

At the time of writing, however, while Microsoft has confirmed that they are currently investigating the incident, not much else is known. It is, however, more than a little curious that this leak should appear very shortly after ‘LAPSUS$’ started specifically touting for employees at Microsoft, Apple, and others to covertly join their ranks. – Coincidence?… You’ll have to decide!
