Microsoft May Be Working to Make Xbox Backward-Compatible Games Work on Windows, According to a Leaker
The well-known leaker Nate the Hate shared an interesting piece of information on the ResetEra forum. Based on what he knows, Microsoft is reportedly trying to make Xbox backward-compatible games run on Windows, although it’s not yet clear whether this is actually possible.
This refers to older titles from the original Xbox and Xbox 360, which currently work through backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles but not on Windows PCs. According to Nate’s information, Microsoft is experimenting with ways to make these games playable on PC as well.
It’s not a simple task, but it could be achieved through a specific emulation system. If successful, this would greatly expand the game library available to PC users who have long-time Xbox accounts.
What It Could Mean for Xbox ROG Ally Users
While this should be taken as a simple rumor, Nate the Hate has a good reputation for reliability. However, in this case, the information is still uncertain, as it seems to involve an experimental project that might not lead to anything concrete.
“There exists a hope to make legacy Xbox (OG and Xbox 360) games BC on ROG and Windows. Whether they succeed is the unknown; but there is an effort being made,” wrote the insider.
“The other unknown would be how extensive will the initiative be in offerings. Will it be what we currently have on Series or will BC expand to add more titles across the Xbox ecosystem.”
It’s unclear whether Microsoft aims to bring the entire backward-compatible catalog to PC or just a portion of it. Still, the idea is certainly interesting.
Such an initiative could also be beneficial for Xbox ROG Ally users, as it would significantly expand the playable library on their devices by adding titles from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 generations.
