Microsoft Promises Windows 11 Updates Focused on Gamers in 2026
Portable gaming devices are gaining significant popularity in the gaming world. These devices allow users to play many modern games anywhere, and later connect them to an external GPU and a larger monitor for extra power and better quality. Microsoft is also contributing to this trend by adapting Windows 11 for gamers and has promised to further optimize it for gaming performance.
Microsoft to Add New Features and Optimize Windows 11 for Gaming
The year 2026 will bring many optimizations for Microsoft’s popular operating system. In its roadmap presentation, the company announced plans to enhance performance while adding new, useful gaming features. These include better background workload management, improved power and energy optimization, and enhanced hardware resource allocation for graphics performance.
Microsoft is already working on background process management. The new full-screen Xbox app reduces RAM usage when launched instead of the desktop, which also helps increase FPS in games by minimizing and optimizing background tasks while playing.
Another feature being developed for portable gaming devices is ASD (Advanced Shader Delivery). This feature preloads shaders while the game is downloading, saving startup time and allowing games to run more smoothly, while also improving battery efficiency on portable systems. Microsoft plans to expand ASD support to more compatible ROG Xbox devices.
Finally, one of the most notable updates coming in 2026 is Auto Super Resolution. This technology improves game resolution and sharpness through upscaling without requiring developer input. Originally released for Copilot+ PCs with Qualcomm processors, it will soon reach all users through future updates. A preview version will be available in early 2026 for ROG Xbox Ally X devices equipped with integrated NPUs.
