Microsoft Sacks Team Whose Job Was to Win General Consumers Back!

Back in 2018, Microsoft announced the launch of its new ‘Modern Life Experiences’ initiative. The object of the program was, in nutshell, an attempt to win people back to their products and services who may have chosen to transition onto something else. – In basic terms, think along the lines of people who bought Apple laptops instead of Windows. Alternatively, those who were buying PS4s instead of Xbox One Xs.

These were the kind of people this new team was charged with bringing back into the fold! So, in other words, no, not businesses/enterprise customers. – This was a specific drive at general day-to-day consumers like you and me!

So, you might be wondering why did Microsoft do this? Well, ultimately, it was because they’d made a lot of bad decisions around the time that, ultimately, didn’t go down too well with their community. Decisions which, they felt, influenced people to choose alternative products/technology. – Following a report via BusinessInsider, however, it seems that Microsoft either considers it a job done, or more likely, a failed project as it has been confirmed that the ‘Modern Life Experiences’ program is being axed!

Microsoft Modern Life Experiences – A Failure, or a Concession?

As part of the announcement, Microsoft has confirmed that its ‘Modern Life Experiences’ program will be shuttered and the circa 200 staff working within it will either have to find another position within the company or accept redundancy.

Why have they finally chosen to close this down though? Well, it’s either one of three possibilities.

  • Microsoft considers it ‘job done’ and doesn’t feel it necessary to carry on (Press X to doubt)
  • Microsoft considers the program a failure that ultimately achieved little of import
  • External factors already solved part of the problem

So, that third point. Well, it’s hard to deny that during the pandemic, Microsoft saw a lot of entirely unexpected success with software programs such as Teams and Skype. In addition, with people staying at home, and needing entertainment, the only console that was relatively available to purchase at the time was the Xbox Series S. Yes, COVID was a crap period for a lot of people. For Microsoft though, it was (for want of better words) a hugely successful spell!

We’re not, of course, attempting to dump on any of the apparent efforts the people at the ‘Modern Life Experiences’ team made (not, incidentally, that I could specifically tell you any of them). – Let’s be honest though, it was an uphill task to begin with and it clearly took something more than a little unusual to get a result that was arguably far beyond what the team ever could’ve achieved!
