Microsoft has announced that support for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, coinciding with the end of support for the operating system itself. This means users and businesses using Office apps will need to upgrade their devices to Windows 11 to continue receiving updates and support.
While Office apps will still function on Windows 10 after support ends, Microsoft warns that performance and reliability issues could arise over time. The company is urging users to update promptly, highlighting the enhanced security, productivity, and compatibility benefits offered by Windows 11.
This move comes as the adoption of Windows 11 has been slower than expected, partly due to the strict hardware requirements that exclude many older devices from upgrading. Despite this, Microsoft is determined to push users toward the new operating system, dubbing 2025 as the “year of the Windows 11 PC upgrade” and launching informational campaigns to emphasize the importance of transitioning.
For users who cannot or do not want to switch to Windows 11, Microsoft offers an alternative: Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows 10. These updates, available to both individual users and businesses, can extend the lifespan of devices running Windows 10 by providing protection against security vulnerabilities.
Microsoft’s strategy combines incentives and restrictions to accelerate the transition to Windows 11. While the company promotes the advantages of its new OS and offers options for those sticking with Windows 10, the decision to end support for Office apps on Windows 10 serves as a strong push toward upgrading.
How users respond to this policy and its impact on the adoption of Windows 11 remains to be seen.
