Microsoft to Optimize Windows 11 for 8GB RAM PCs as Memory Prices Rise
The memory shortage is making this a bad year to buy hardware, while laptop and desktop PC manufacturers are adapting by adding configurations with 8 GB of RAM.
Microsoft seems committed to this and will optimize its Windows 11 operating system to offer faster startup times and adapt the system for PCs that only have 8 GB of RAM. These statements come from the recent IFA event held in Berlin in recent days.
Windows 11 Aims to Improve Boot Times and Memory Usage
Users are reluctant to choose PCs with such a small amount of RAM, as Windows does not seem to be optimized for this minimum of 8 GB. But Microsoft has promised better loading times, faster startup with Windows Hello, and even system optimizations to improve performance with as little as 8 GB of RAM. We have already heard about one of these optimizations, with Microsoft extending its low-latency profile to more of the operating system’s own applications.
This move could slow down the popularity of the MacBook Neo, now that its price is not as attractive as it was at launch. The MacBook Neo has only 8 GB of RAM, but macOS seems better optimized and more aware of RAM usage. We saw an example with the weather app, a simple feature for showing the temperature and whether it is going to rain, which uses more than 1 GB of RAM on Windows while on macOS it uses less than one-fifth of that amount.
If Microsoft manages to optimize how Windows 11 works on PCs with less RAM, it could provide some relief in the current situation and help users who want to spend less on a laptop or desktop PC for basic tasks.
