Microwaving Your Tea for the Best Health Results? Why Not Give it a Chia!

David Tennant microwaving tea in ITV’s “Broadchurch”

Did you know that the microwave oven is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary this year? There is one in practically every home and yet apart from defrosting food, heating processed meals and making that large pizza you didn’t finish last night a viable breakfast, we’ve yet to find a particularly satisfying use for it. Well, that’s about to change, as Dr Quan Vuong from the University of Newcastle (Australia) has suggested that microwaving your tea is the best way to extract all the benefits.

Speaking with NBC news, Dr Vuong’s research suggests that by microwaving your tea, you can help promote an increase in the release of antioxidants such as polyphenols which in turn can help lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and hypertension.

The approved method for microwaving your tea is as follows;

  1. Put hot water in the cup with your teabag (presumably by boiling a kettle?)
  2. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds on half power.
  3. Remove and let it diffuse for a minute.

Dr Vuong’s research has been looking into the potential benefits of additional nutritional extraction via the usage of microwaves and this discovery is certain to spark interest.

However, before you go reaching for your teabags, please note that this method is designed to work with Green tea & Black tea (not to be confused with tea with no milk) – so probably best you try this out yourself before offering someone a cup of tea using this method, as it might end up over you rather than in them.
